The summer verdict must be one of failure, late flourish or not. It was all left far too late, the boss and indeed the board too had the chance to get our house in order well before the start of the season after a shambolic late winter and spring. Look back over 2011 and there have been a handful, literally, of victories. Very little else. The squad went from talented to desperate.
Five signings later it looks much more healthy – however – those of you hoping that Wenger has abandoned his youth based approach are very much incorrect.
Experienced players are vital in any approach, they help guide the younger players and are priceless in the dressing room. The reaction of Jack Wilshere to the signing of Arteta and that of Benayoun, shows that young players love nothing better than a challenge and a more experienced campaigner to learn from and look up too. At least, those young players with the correct attitude, look at a hard-worker like Park, an approach like his should help inspire the right attitude among younger players.
In the center of midfield, Arteta will shelter Aaron Ramsey who is not yet ready to play week after week, it is still too early in his development and he was exposed in the opening weeks of the season. Arteta is a fighter but one with a lot of quality, he is now the most experienced Premier League player in our squad and that speaks volumes.
When I heard the deal was initially off I was not happy at all, especially with Benayoun looking like our only addition on that day. Don’t get me wrong, Benayoun is a decent squad player but we needed much more than that, and whilst Arteta isn’t a glamour signing, we maybe needed a player of this ilk more than a £30m superkid.
Another benefit of the players we have brought in is that it will give the squad some belief again, you could tell against United and Liverpool that this team didn’t really believe, it looked like it was just going through the motions – we now have two very experienced Premier League campaigners, a vastly experienced German international and the captain of the South Korean national team to help instil belief. Anyone who thinks these characters will not have an impact in the dressing room is wrong.
Andre Santos will help guide Kieran Gibbs, and also bring even more pace into the squad. At times last season the squad looked so slow and one dimensional, Cesc was slow, Nasri was nippy with the ball, van Persie is pretty slow and Arshavin seems to have lost a yard of pace. The only real pace we had was in Gael Clichy and his end product was usually dreadful. We now have Gervinho, Park, Walcott, Wilshere, Chamberlain and Santos – he will be a real threat on the left hand side by the looks of things.
A few thoughts on our signings individually:
Per Mertesacker: He is slow, so what? You don’t get many people with Usain Bolt’s speed when you are as tall as him. Many point to his decline since 2006 and say he is past it – well, if you are past it at age 26 I might as well give up now.
The German psyche is pretty unique, they are strong as hell mentally and boy do we need a bit of that. With Per and Vermaelen at the back we have a very strong paring, add the class of Bakary Sagna to that and we have what looks on paper, I add, one of the best defences in the league. They have to gel though, and fast.
Andre Santos: He is a player that I don’t know all that much about. Brilliant going forward it seems, the ability to make dangerous late runs and take it past players with ease. He will probably add another dimension to our attacking play and offer a threat from set pieces, something we really need to improve on. Defensively I hope he is good, we need a bit of stability at left back. The only concern I have is that we will have two players adapting to the Premier League at a time where we need them to hold strong. If they line up; Sagna, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Santos - then I think the experience and leadership that Sagna and Vermaelen bring will get them through and help them adapt quickly.
Yossi Benayoun: A very handy player to have in the squad, he is versatile and can score goals. He brings with him experience that is not to be sniffed at. Experienced, talented and exactly the type of player we need on the bench.
Mikel Arteta: A brilliant signing in my book, as I said above. He brings with him a ton of experience and quality – around better players I think he will step up and deliver, he wants to prove himself at the highest level and this is his chance. He jumped at the chance to join Arsenal, he should jump at the chance to show his talent.
Thoughts on the departures:
Nicklas Bendtner: A shame. He is going out on loan but has no plans to ever play for Arsenal again. Bendtner is a talent and a goalscoring talent at that – he will go onto big things and will probably be looked on as one that got away. He will do well at Sunderland.
Armand Traore: Thank goodness he has gone
Henri Lansbury: I doubt he will be returning, sadly. Maybe he isn’t good enough bit as a local lad it will surely hurt him that he will be spending the season at another club yet again. Good luck, Henri.

Arsenal News 24/7

hiya, agree with all your assesment, want to look at formation options, what do you think abot maybe doing 343 as follows for teams like stoke blackburn away
chesney
kosser-PM4-TV5
sagna-jack-arteta-santos
theo-rvp-gervinho
it has height pace and ability to switch defence to attack and vice versa , also copes with long ball mercahnts, you can fit all the rest of the team squad into this formation the trouble is will wenger try it !!
NB52 leaving for good (gutted(not)
lansbury – sure we could find a place in squad for him as he is a gunner like jenks, frimpong etc, reckon wenger pissed off with arm of tattoo !!
we have cleared ou a lot of wages & dead wood on top of the big 2 who did not want to be with us any more so i think overall we have come out “ok” with the squad as it now has experiance many captains and fight whichis what we needed, so lets get behind the “squad” as a whole and not just the team, benny may be a suprise bonus for us, remember tom watt on arsenal tv saying he was an arsenal player in the making a few years ago…..
The 8-2 massacre willl be forgotten and forgiven if the gunners start winningg ames and shoot up the table to fourth place
Think January will also be a key window. It’s clear with Goetze, Hazard, and M’vila bids Wenger doesn’t mind spending. If we can be around 5th or 6th in Jan, one of these signings will push us to fourth and maybe a cup
Good piece. but you missed my compatriot Chu-Young Park
Good article, but i dont understand the change of direction after your opening paragraph..you kind of went on to contradict yourself. Regardless i agree with everything except the opening sentence
park scored a hat-trick for south korea today, you forgot to mention him!!!!!!!!!
park scored a hat-trick for south korea today, you forgot to mention him!!!!!!!!
Lansbury does have a future at Arsenal, watch the highlights of the under 21′s England match last night and you’ll see he has all that’s needed to be an Arsenal great. He helped Norwich get promoted, will also help West Ham get promoted and I think Wenger just wants him to get one more quality season behind him before he’s promoted to the first team.
Lansbury is a very good midfielder he should not be let go.
Park’s Hat trick, he scores goals like Van Persie. Three quality goals and all different. He’s not just a one trick pony nor a poacher this guy can play.

Not being able to right-click on this site is really annoying by the way, especially seeing as the benefits are completely negated by using keyboard shortcuts.
That Lansbury could only get a loan deal to a championshiop club more or less confirms that he wasn’t going to play, at least this season. Just because he’s a local lad doesn’t mean he should be given preference.
For those fans who are concerned about the quality of the new signings, I can recall the title-winning side of 1947/8. Manager Tom Whitaker brought in the experience of Joe Mercer of Everton and made him Captain;also Ronnie Rook of Fulham, both in the twilight of their careers. There may have been others.
They nurtered the youngsters in the side and success was assured. It will happen again.
Park didn’t arrive on deadline day though..
That’s true Martin but he’s just a late a signing as those that did.
I think you’re forgetting some points here. These players didn’t come to Arsenal for the money. They all came here with a point to prove. Mertesacker is a passionate Arsenal fan. Park wants to show what he can do on the big stage in the twilight of his career and is an Arsenal fan too. Benayoun wants to prove he’s a player worthy of being picked every week. Santos sees Arsenal as his salvation after being dropped from the Brazil squad and the complete collapse of Fenerbahce. And Arteta see Arsenal as his final chance at champions league glory and putting himself into consideration for the national team.
None of these players are going to suffer from a lack of spirit. They’re very unlikely to be distracted by offers from other clubs. They’re all of a proven pedigree and they will all fight for the team. That is the one thing that defines them over players such as Nasri and Fabregas, to all of them bar Mertesacker this is their last chance at real glory. Nasri used us as a stepping stone, fabregas had Barca and their silverware torrent begging him to come.
What they will bring to the team is something that youngsters can never give, it’s the urgency of time. There is no greater motivation sapper than to know you have a long career ahead of you and time to fulfill your dreams. Having 6 or 7 old boys on the team playing on their last chance at glory will be a motivation that rubs off. It’s the reason why Utd look so well able to mix youth and experience in their case their experience are winners with an insatiable desire for more in our case it’s the motivation to finally realize their dreams.
Gud write up 4rm goonblog.bongo ur contribution is spot on.never tot about it that way.many contributors on le grove shd learn 4rm you.kip it up guys.ARSENAL TO THE SKIN OF MY TEETH.
Arsenal has certainly done good business in the market. They left it late but brought in quality. Likes of Arteta and Mertesacker will definitely add value to the team. Fabregas and Nasri were good but for recent purchases by Arsenal definitely show how desperate they are to get hands on silverware. And with quality signings they will definitely put up good fight.
I am positive that Arsene signings brought experienced, stability and urgency to their play.
For the next 5 games we can judge how our Left-Back Santos will compliment the attack as well as defending. I had a feeling he will be a solid player.
I am definite he will buy Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard, Fann M’Vila and either Goertz/Martin. I prefer Goertz but Martin looks the likest and we shall see the last of Arshavin, Rosicky, Squllichi, Almunia.
@Bongo I couldnt agree more with your assessment and if you had a blogspot I would read it for your lucid comment and insight. I wanted to mention that I vaguely remember Sol Campbells parting advice (post 2nd stint) to the young players he found in the new Colney class which was much in the same vein. Also Jose the anti-football manager said some wise stuff about how he likes to work with footballers in the twilight of their careers for much the same reasons. You Sir are in good company.
