Since May Arsenal have inquired after a whole host of players. This may have been the result of the mistakes that were made last summer where we had a few stone wall targets – when we failed to bring them in we were left reliant on youth or forced into a panic buy. One of these was Sebastian Squillaci. He was well down the lists of center-backs Arsene Wenger wanted, he played like it too, consistently left high and dry with our high defensive line.
Both Cahill and Samba have been targeted this summer along with Phil Jones. Personally I feel that Arsene wanted to give him another year at Blackburn and felt he had to act quickly after realising that was never going to happen. The sum of money offered would have been a new transfer record for Arsenal. Before this, Arsenal had already spoken to Blackburn about Samba – a fee was agreed in principle, £9m rising with add-on’s. An issue arose – I guess it was due to clauses Blackburn agreed to when they signed the player about a percentage of the fee being paid to his previous club – their owners are so naive when it comes to football, they don’t have a clue. Samba still wants the move and Arsenal, rightly, won’t pay above what they offered. I get the feeling later in the summer some sort of compromise will be agreed though.
Arsenal are moving for Cahill though, the suggestion is at least one player will move in the opposite direction. Personally, I would like to see Vela go there for a season on loan, maybe with Lansbury too. I would rather take straight cash for Nicklas Bendtner or keep him – he can be a valuable asset to the club, despite what some sections of the support think.
The fee will be a sizable one but there is money in the bank, it would be a step in the right direction but the defensive problem is one one strictly reduced to the personnel on offer. It runs deeper and that must be sorted when the players report back next week for pre-season training.
A fair amount of time ago Arsene Wenger hinted at the ideal number of center-backs he likes in a squad.. last season we were still one short of that number – it is more than possible that we will see another defender arrive along with Cahill. We will probably have a look at the free agents on offer but it would not be at all surprising to see Samba arrive as I said earlier. Somebody like Bendtner could majorly pad out a deal like that, and Blackburn would have the funds to pay his hefty wages. Could his pride take that, I wonder?
Another, more exotic name, that has been linked with us closely recently is that of Ricky Alvarez. He is a player that nobody really knows much about – some self styled South American football pundits tend to think he is the real deal. If he is then that is great, it could well be the case that he takes up the squad position of somebody like Tomas Rosicky who I don’t expect to be an Arsenal player next season.
Various media sources have the deal at an advanced stage – some claim he has already signed. Apparently we are prepared to meet the fee demanded (from what I am told) and with the player seemingly delighted at the prospect of being an Arsenal player I can’t imagine anything holding it up. Transfers are complicated things though – lets see what occurs.
And Gervinho… did he have a medical yesterday – didn’t he have a medical yesterday? I was told at about 9am yesterday that a player was at Colney for a medical. Many mentioned Gervinho’s name as talk of that spread throughout the day – the suggestion is though that it may even have been Cahill at the training ground. The Gervinho deal is all but done though, it will be announced in due course.
A lot of people in the media – and in the blogosphere – have born the brunt of a lot of frustration at people who are privileged enough to have information that is not readily available. There are bad eggs out there, there are also genuine people. When I pass on information I do so in good faith – in other words I don’t make it up, what would I gain out of it? Website hits? Do me a favour. Why would I put my Samba news on Twitter about 24 hours before writing it up? In football things change rapidly – information can be outdated very quickly. A little understanding would make the online football world a lot more pleasant.
Anyway, that is my say over. I have just written this before a 5am start so I hope it made sense..
Til tomorrow.

Arsenal News 24/7

All these names being linked with Arsenal I bet we end up with zilch, because Wenger is dragging his feet and afraid to spend money on decent players but would rather keep the rubbish ones that we have, but as long as the board can line their pockets and Kroenke doesn’t seem much interested what happens even though he’s the major shareholder. I would rather have Usmanov as the major shareholder then perhaps we would see some significant changes to the team.
Glad you’re not running my club Judith.
Rosicky … when his contract will expire ?
So maybe it isnt all as bad as you thought?
thanks a lot for the update martin. am I the only one who thinks that these purchases are helping in taking the sting out of cesc’s departure? Cesc is one of the world’s current best midfielders, but nothing is black and white. At times of DIRE need he has come short of delivering. Dont get me wrong, I know very well that he has helped us win and get out of tight spots more times than not. Just that..there was something different this season.
All names mentioned above are the real targets for arsenal and i believe will end up at the emirates before transfer deadline, maybe more with the likes of Fab and Nas going. Just looking forward to the annoucments to appease frustrated fans. In all honesty the market hasnt really started yet tomorrow will be a busy day me thinks
I,ve agreed with Judith’s comments on other blogs and I agree with her once again because this lady talks a lot of sense.
we r tired of all sort of rumours, wenger must bring in players
Those names are familiar one only hope that those players finally see emirates’ stadium.
With such positive fans like Judith and Goona who needs Spurs fans!! Keep your chins up!
For the last past season arsenal having been coming close to win trophy I want all fans to pray for the team
What alot of us seem to forget is great player that he is Cesc’s heart hasn’t really been with Arsenal for the past season or so, he’s nearly always injured, and to prove the point how could a captain of Arsenal be watching the spanish grand prix while his so called team mates were playing a vital match trying to secure automatic entry to europe, that fellow gooners is not on so lets get as much as we can for him while the goings good.
He’ll wish in his heart he’d have stayed with us when he’s sitting on the bench like he often does for Spain.. oh by the way we must fight tooth and nail to keep Samir…Anyway he said a week or two ago “DON’T BELIEVE WHAT YOU READ IN THE MEDIA”
Gervinho or Gary Cahill having a medical, surely someone can tell the difference? lol!
@judith and gooner:
so you basically wish that we develop into the new chelsea, man shitty, psg, malaga, etc?
thanks…but no thanks.
@judith and goona:
so you basically wish that we develop into the new chelsea, man shitty, psg, malaga, etc?
thanks…but no thanks.
arsene wenger should try his best and sign a defender
Jason fellow Gooner? how can you accuse people of not being positive when we’re a laughing stock as a club, we were kicked in the teeth!last season, other clubs are signing quality players, and can’t you see that we are not going to qualify for europe next season at the rate we’re going? so it’s no wonder many gooners have lost confidence and we take umbridge to people who accuse us of being Spud supporters in fact we’re the ones who really care about the club and until something positive happens we’ll continue to have negative thoughts.
I think what judith said about kroenke and usmanov shareholding is right.b’cox usmanov really care about us winning silverware dis season……
I personally would love to see both Samba and cahill join. Vermaelen could be moved to left back and I’ say that we’d have a very fearsome defence with Sagna, Vermaelen, Cahill and Samba. With Djourou, Koscielny, Gibbs, Jesnkinson as back up that is decent enough.
I worry though if we lose all of Cesc, Nasri and Clichy though that if we do not make a statement of intent and buy someone like Mata or Sneider then fans are going to be even more disgruntled.
I just hope AW doesn’t bang all the pressure on Jack and Rambos shoulders it wouldn’t be fair at this stage.
Also to add I would be in favour of signing someone like Barton
Pls wenger buy cahil, samba, gervinho nd alverez we av d money save us 4rm tension
Goonertank there’s plenty of oil in that tank of yours nice one!
@Goona
I don’t buy this “Cesc’s heart isn’t in it” rubbish.
If he didn’t care about Arsenal he would be pushing for a move, like all the others do. However, I think he is genuinely torn by this. He doesn’t say anything concrete in public because he cares about Arsenal and Arsenal fans, and when he was on the pitch last season he was still ten times better than the rest of our midfield and better than pretty much every midfielder in the premier league. He would get clear aggrevated by decisions by the referee, because he has the desire to fight for his club.
I’m not saying he doesn’t want to go to Barcelona, but I do think he cares about Arsenal and when he does play for Arsenal he respects the club and gives all he has. He has been played at times when he just shouldn’t because he was injured, like in the second leg against Barcelona, in which he was dreadful. I don’t put that down to a lack of desire on that occasion I put it down to a lack of match fitness. He is a class player and an excellent human being and I wish him all the best if he is with us next season or not. I hope he is but it is looking less likely.
I will love Arsenal to keep samir and allow fabregas to live.Wenger said he will annouce the signing of alvez, cahill and gervinho on first july so let wait and see.
i rather love to see arsenal buy Samba,CAHILL,RISKY ALVERESZ and make sure that SAMIR NASRI will not by any means go toany club if not sign for arsenal pls.
Midfield overhaul
Rosicky Fabregas Denilson Diaby Nasri – All Out
Chamberlain Parker Barton Mata Alvarez – All in
Forward overhaul
Bendtner & Vela – out
Gervinho & Defo – In
Defensive overhaul
Eboue Squillaci Traore Clichy – out
Jagielka Samba Cahill Enrique – in
Keeper
Almunia – out
Lehmann – in (as 3rd choice and player/coach)
Vieira to also return as player/coach.
Goona is a Spud!
the rumours r getting me pissed off, arsenalfc is just too stingy
Pliz Arsene open your chq book. Your slow pace is killing me. Dare the devil and bring Etoo Fils.
I would rather chew my own ball sack than watch Barton in an arsenal shirt!!
If rosicky, denilson n fab go then they’re Gunna be replaced by Alvarez and gervinho and I reckon 1 other, hopefully Parker or mata.
We only need cahill in defence. With TV and Cahill first choice, djourou (who I thought did well last season) and kosceilny (who didnt do too bad considering it was his first epl season) second choice, and squillaci a last resort and even song to back him up. It has to be like this because if we get a another top defender in someone will end up warming the bench up and top defenders won’t stand for it.
We still need another option up front though. Cham and rvp can’t do it all by themselves. Even if Theo goes up front we still need another striker, preferably an adebayor type (just not as lazy) who we can use as a plan b and get crosses in if plan a isn’t working.
www- you think that would improve our team really?! lol
goona-were a laughing stock?! get real, what does that mean for the teams that finished below us? what did chelski win after they spent how much!? then sacked there manager. surely that qualifies for laughing stock above us.
other clubs are signing quality players are they, care to mention who exactly? grow up then remove the cock off your white shirt.
judas, sorry judith maybe you should become a man city fan then.
bottom line is, no one knows whats going on, if i had to guess i would say why would we buy cahill for 17m when he’d be free next yr plus there are better or on par cheaper players available like vertonghen, zapata etc… unless wenger rate cahill reeeeaalllly highly?
cesc isnt going for less than 50m and nasri will prolly agree to 100pw.
gervinho seems like the most likely and samba is 50/50 for me cos i want vertonghen. though both would be nice. then shift sqillz and promote bartley.
The bottom line is until the commercial contracts for shirt and kit sponsors (Nike and EMirates respectively) are renewed at market rates, £20m per year not £5m per year we will not be competing for big money transfers.
As long as the CL revenue keeps coming in we are deemed to be successful in the eyes of Wenger and the board because we are guiding ourselves through the choppy financial waters.
Whislt this happens our marketing credibility goes to zero and we can not attract any top players as we do not pay top dollar wages.
And if Ivan “the mouthpiece” Gazidis thinks the financial fairplay rules will turn us around then he is mistaken.
Big money men at chelsea, city, madrid and barca will ensure they continue to compete in CL spending what they like.
For every club like Arsenal there will be 4 clubs like Madrid, Barca, Chelsea and City to fight with who spend beyond their means
Honestly, the Football Manager attitude of fans is starting to irk me. Never underestimate the importance of knowing your teammates on the field, and rebuilding the entire team destroys that. If we get Cahill and Gervinho I’ll be satisfied, as long as we replace all players leaving with someone better.
Alvarez and Oxlaide-Chamberlain I can’t comment on, as I don’t know what impact they would have. OC would a good one for the future I suppose.
Hav ur paryer to urself for own use.
Almunia, Denilson, Bendtner, Rosicky and Fabregas OUT
Eto’o, Cahill, Samba, Scott Parker,Alvared and Gervinho IN
AK47 yes Chelski are a laughing stock but the laugh’s on us too and if you can’t see that well you must be the one wearing the white shirt’ spurs supporter? huh! certainly not me! as I mentioned before it’s only the true Arsenal supporters who fear for the future of the club the one’s who speak their minds.
Oh and by the way i’d love the 3 players that Man u have signed in record time to play for us and worse luck they’ll probably get Samir too….Gawd! I hope not! us? at the rate we’re going we’ll probably end up with a few cheapies as usual….
goona, if you were really a true supporter you would know that as far as the future is concerned arsenal are prolly in the strongest position and thats without the fair play rules coming into effect.
so you would love phil jones as back up for 20mil? even tho we have someone in that mould for half the price. and miquel and bartley.
ill admit i would have liked young, 20m though, not sure. we have nasri and shavin in that position and they both cost less.
de gea is good but a gamble and its debatable whether he is better the chezza, who was miles cheaper. and has prem experience.
you say they will prolly get nasri too!? really? after they have just brought young. and nani hasnt left yet has he?
so explain to me why were a laughin stock because obviously this white shirt has blinded my vision.
could it be because we finished forth behind oil rich man city? uk ref darlings manure? oil rich chelski? financially were not on the same planet so theres no shame in that.
is it because we have the best stadium?, though the home fans and regulations are letting it down.
is it because we have the best scouting network globally?
or the best youth system in the uk that will provide this country with many technical players for the national team for years to come?
players we buy are not cheapies as you so elegantly put it. the market is ridiculously inflated because of sugar daddies and goverment influence.
dont get it twisted im well aware certain aspects need improving, but were hardly a laughing stock.
arsenal til i die what ever the weather.
Another great post. Thanks for the update!
First off nobody has ever heard of Ricky Alvarez is a bit of an overstatement. Palermo and Roma have been trying to sign this guy and I read Inter just named him their #1 summer target. He’s the best player on the best team in Argentina. Second point is if Arsenal sale Cesc to Barca for a reduced rate then we will be laughed at. We’ve been buying mediocre/young players for the last few years to save money and selling a prized asset for less than its worth squashes all that. After all this is Arsenal FC not Cesc’s training school.
Aint too worried that cesc is off as although ill always admire him i think its great business for us and we can cope with his loss as wilshire and ramsay are progressing and im sure quality at a good price will be bought to compensate cescs departure.Cesc has give us 8 years nearly and has been very loyal and classy for us and all gooners shouldnt forget this and they should all like the man forever.Im just very concerned about samir as we really need him and i feel he owes arsene, arsenal and the fans another contract.Im sure arsene can convince him to stay, well thats my big hope anyway. Why are we not announcing signings to convince samir to stay and to convince us the fans that the future still looks good. This club absolutely amazes me for the way they conduct themselves in their lack of transfer activities. You would almost swear that the club gets a kick out of putting us gooners through this.Clichy leaving is sad to see as although im more a fan of sagna he has by enlarge been a very good player for us over a long period of time. Its always sad to see players leave when they have been with us a long time and id like to think that cesc and gael will go with heavy hearts aswell as heavy wallets.Feel a little sorry for the boss but then again not that sorry because he has contributed to another turbulent summer.Fingers crossed all looks ago as we head to geordie land in mid august.
Fingers crossed all looks ok as we head to geordie land in mid august was the intended line. The beer is starting to kick in so forgive my mistake please. Its this club that has put me on the drink as my nerves are all over the show,a bit like our defence last term.
I understand what you say but i think we need wait for more information before said “yes, im sure, this unescapable” well i dont about this its true, and you in the past, you was liar. So dont is strange, dont feel surprise by the people think you only like sell the notice regardless if the news are true or not. for example i remember when you said us that maradona will be the new arsenal manager in season 2011-2012, well we yet are wait got this happen, the people on the blog was scared “maradona? ohh crap” “are you kidding me?” well you can learn something about this, dont say lie
Clichy and Nasri are almost ManCity players
clichy will not be a loss to the club as he has displayed countless poor performances with lots of crucial and costly mistakes this past 2 or 3 seasons.samir on the other hand just ooozes class and it would be very upsetting to see him leave just at a time when he is really maturing footballing wise and starting to show what a gifted player he is.he is a player who is very exciting to watch as he combines good work rate, goals, flair, assists and lovely balance.i suggest arsene you sell cesc and pay samir whatever it takes to see him run out in the famous colours next term and there after, boss get your act together sharpess, because if cesc and samir depart this club is no longer a big club and will be seen as pathetic from other clubs fans and our own.gooners the world over deserve better from arsenal.sort this once again shambolic, turbulent soap opera summer out now.
Last year we had signed Chamakh and Kosc till July 1st. And they both performed well. And we all know about Squillaci.
I’m quite dissapointed we haven’t bought anyone this summer.Even gervinho doesn’t look a huge improvement to me.
Here are some of the most memorable Arsenal matches:
http://delhigunner.wordpress.com/2011/07/01/most-memorable-arsenal-matches/
Cool off and be rational and not be influence by the media noises.
I don’t credit this article taken from this source but you get what I meant
http://www.footballfriendsonline.com/blogs/2011/7/3/wenger-we-trust.html
A person who loves to flirt with the media, has an eye for young talent, has the capability of a true army general who has passion and love for the same football club as you do … so why are you so reluctant to show your faith in him.
It’s just something that Arsene loves to do, hold the cards in his hand till the last moment and that’s what he will do in this year’s big transfer market. He is a tactician and it should not be a forgotten fact that he took the most difficult task in the days where the entire world’s economy was on a low, of building up a new stadium and still keeping Arsenal in the most elite group of football clubs, the Champions League. It took some bad decision making in the Champions League to beat the world’s youngest (Arsenal) where Arsenal FC took the game to the world’s best (Barcelona) and not to forget the world’s best were not even matched by the world’s most expensive (Real Madrid) when it came to playing football.
Logically keeping your options hidden is the right thing to do as there are certain players which are required to be shed from the team and incase their replacements are made imminent earlier than their sale this could be the key factor over negotiation of selling price for such players. I personally believe that Wenger’s philosophy is to hit the opponents on the patience meter, where whoever falters first has to pay the asking price for the other teams’ player. In different geographical locations across the world the power lies with different people who are attached to a player, sometimes the effecting party is the football club to which the player is attached, sometimes it is the player’s manager / family, sometimes it is the buying club as the player happens to be a fan of the club since childhood, and so on an so forth. The point is to identify which factor can be the deciding factor to change a player’s decision.
There is a list of players circulating on various websites and tabloids who are thought to be a surplus to the club (Arsenal in this case) but all those players cannot be sold that’s a common understanding where even some of these players can be used as substitutes or replacements to the more efficient of players in the same position i.e. utilizing the less efficient set of players in matches which are not so important, in order to shield the key set of players. As under usual circumstances Arsenal FC plays around 60 games per season and as it was seen last season that as the climax arises the time interval between matches grow shorter and shorter and player’s fitness is tested more and more not to forget that each match is played at a different geographical location. Therefore a fully fit team is a key requirement to provide the finishing touches to all the effort that is put up since the start of the season.
In short Wenger will hold on to reveal his signings till later July and during this period will try to offload the players, who are reluctant to be part of the squad next season, are wanted at a reasonable price by other clubs or are a liability to the club. It’s all a patience game, till then read all, hear all but believe only what is confirmed officially.
bullshit, nothing has happened yet cahill and alazarez rnt comin gervinho signing tomoro
@ oliver… Need a bit of sense. Everyone needs to look at the facts. The fact is Arsenal already have 26 players over the age of 21. This means as it stands the board will not sanction any more purchases of players over 21 until some are sold or have agreed season long loan deals. United have only signed 3 players one is under 21 the other 2 are only possible because 6 players have left the club, 4 permanent and 2 on loan. The other spaces have been taken up by players becoming 21. So until they sell or arrange more loans they will not buy anymore either. This is why the transfer market is a little slow. The 25 man rule is really having an effect for the first time. Next year it will be even slower, we will have another 7 players joining the 25 man squad, so they has to be taken into consideration as well.
think judith is deranged… bullshite will we end up with nothing… we will end up with at least 4 i believe, with gervinho looking concrete, alvarez, either to us or inter i imagine and he looks fuckin good for 23. cahill im on the fence about, i would rather get samba and vertonghen as this gives us much more options, as samba would be class against the stokes of this world and vertonghen against the barcelonas etc. i, along with everyone else would love to see a marquee signing, such as benzema, hazard, ganso etc. also think willian would be a good addition.
keep the fiath haters, it will happen and fuck the pundits who say we cant attract superstars anymore… sorry when hyave we ever bought superstars, we buy them and turn them almost immediately. the media know fuck all so sack em off.
never know what to believe to be honest
alvarez looks to be joining inter and coyle has said no one has bid for cahill,
martin what do you reckon to this mate
Get Nasri and cesc face to face with Wenger and he’ll talk them round.
They big in the press shooting off etc. but when he gets them one on one face to face they go to pot
Let’s clear major doubts and myth which the media wanted to poisons without prove and rubbish jounalism.
