It’s been a familiar season at the Grove in 2010/2011, with polished, mature performances against Barcelona and Chelsea, along with unforgettably poor and pathetic one’s against Birmingham, Tottenham, and who can forget Newcastle.
You could say we’ve made progress in some areas this season. For instance, beating the so called ‘big teams’ in the League, getting to a Final, finding a Goalkeeper we can rely on and a young, English Superstar. They are positives, but for a Club of our stature, is that really good enough? I don’t think it is.
Now for the negatives, and there are a alot: the horrendous home record this season, defensive incapabilities not being addressed and costing us, not adapting to the way other teams play against us, like it’s either ‘our way’ or no way at all. Not strengthening in areas that everybody who knows football, know we need strenghtened.
I have came to the conclusion that we haven’t really improved on season’s past because the negatives outway the positives, for me anyway. It’s a simplistic way to look at it -but when you’ve seen our season plummet in the way it has – it’s blatantly obvious to see what needs fixing, and what we need to take us to THAT next level. Do I need to spell it out for you Arsene? In my opinion, and a lot of other Journalists’, fans’ and pundits’, Arsenal need a Defender who’s purpose is actually to defend, not know how to caress a ball and bring it out from the back, a Defensive Midfielder for cover/competition for Alex Song, who will be off to the African Nations Cup in January. I do believe we need a typical number 9, like Eduardo pre-injury. I believe and so do many with those positions filled with been there, done that, proven players, then we can finally push on from March – May where we’ve floundered in the last few years.
We call ourselves a ‘big club’ and it’s about time we started acting like one. Do you think Man United would call this a successful season? And before you tell me ‘well compare our net spend, blah de blah’, show me one team who have spent as little as we have and dominated their League or won trophies? You won’t find one.
Chelsea, United, and City have spent big over the years and you can say they’ve bought success, but who hasn’t? Every side spends money, maybe not to the extent of those Clubs, but what ends up in their’s or our trophy cabinet(s)? Another thing we haven’t done which they have is strenghten when we’re at our strongest. When we let most of the invincibles leave, we relied on youth, and I know that was Arsene’s ‘plan’ all along, but it’s failed miserably. At that time, we should have kept the Pires’, the Campbell’s of this world to show the Diaby’s and Song’s how to grind out results and get over the finishing line. But there was a clear-out and they were left to figure out for themselves, mostly. Our Captain Cesc made a fantastic point in his controversial interview with Don Balon, where he said:
“I Felt that if you made a bad game it was okay because your partner solved it. Those players made you better.”
And there lies my point, who was there to correct Diaby or Denilson’s mistakes when they were thrusted into the limelight, and onto the big stage? No one is the answer.
I know now those days are gone, and we cannot change that, but now we have to start buying experienced, proven quality because despite what Arsene says about our young side ‘improving’ and ‘growing’ year on year, when it comes to the crunch, they will never go that one step further, because they don’t know how to.
I think, I hope Arsene has started to see what we’ve all been seeing for a few years now, and will now make the necessary changes to improve the ‘mentality’ of the team, Arsene’s favourite word. This is the summer where ‘le professeur’ either buys experience and we start seeing evolution, or where he buys a couple of unknown Ivorians and a couple of Barcelona kids (he has already), which isn’t the best sign. Everyone is on their holidays and there is going to be a lot of speculation, a lot of ‘supposed’ targets, but we need to give Arsene the chance to make these changes, and not just bash him from pillar to post when the season has just ended.
Shall I end this piece positively or negativley? Hmm, tough decision. I think I’ll end it like our season ended, sorry. If Arsene does continue to buy the way he has done, then I’m afraid it’s the end for the greatest Manager in our history. But I shall say no more until the end of August.
It’s time to look FORWARD to next season now (I did end it positively, SEE!)
Enjoy your summer’s!

Arsenal News 24/7

For me, this season was a failure, but not only due to the fact that we did not win anything, but more because we were not consistent. I am a Wenger supporter because as much as I want trophies, I understand the fiscal responsibility Arsene takes on. Most fans seem to think Arsenal has excess funds. But Arsenal is still in debt from the stadium, and spending now is jeopardizing the future. Having said that, we definitely needed some reinforcements and Arsene did get it wrong there.
But my warning to all the fans adamant about spending money is this, spending does not guarantee success. It can only take you so far.
I think our system and our personnel don’t match, so either we have an overhaul, or we play differently. I see a lot of people calling for mass changes, but changing too fast can be detrimental (Trust me, I know from my seeing my own organization). Arsenal are struggling to find a balance, but I do think we are close. What we don’t have is depth in some departments, and I believe Arsene will fix that this summer.
To sum up, this season was a failure. But, I also think we have progressed. I think the team is better off. We know some players will leave now, and others have stepped up. The thing is, with that bad of an end to the season, I see no way but up. People may call me deluded, but I still see a bright future. But it’s taking a lot longer than what we all hoped for.
@Venky
Yes most bloggers have no say at all in what actually goes on at the club – but he has an opinion. Just like you are in your comment. Why slag him off for that? The irony of you writing that comment shows a lot about yourself..
I also thought what he had to say was very valid.
Defensively we was just shockingly and annoyingly so poor,we cant ever say this season just gone was progressive.Wenger is an absolute muppet not to have strenghtened in jan.He should for once just go get the players at whatever cost.Im not to dissapointed to hear clichy looks like he is going as he in truth like most of our defensive clowns has made a whole catalogue of mistakes that have cost us.In my eyes only sagna and tv5 are good enough defenders to adorn our famous colours.Ship the rest out along with wenger if he fails yet again to deliver next term.As for cesc sell him to city for a mega fee as he no longer is of massive importance to us.Hes an overrated, injury prone, moaning, non leader of an average arsenal side.Keeping samir is far more important to us i think. If wenger has any sense which im starting to doubt big time he should buy quickly in this window because us fans have always been put through it in the transfer periods and always been let down by him and the club. The reality is the club down the road have shown more ambition this last while when it comes to player recruitment. We are much, much bigger than them and a mega investment summer will send out a real message to all,but most importantly us gooners that the arsenal mean business for a pleasant change.
Thanks for commenting. He has made mistakes but it finally looks like he’s showing intent, as his comments on a French radio station showed. We do have to invest this summer in proven quality with experience, if we can.
I don’t agree with you on Cesc. Playing so much at a young age has affected him, as making 300 appearances for a Club when you’ve only just turned 24 is pretty incredible. Cesc will never be sold to a rival Club in our League and he wouldn’t want to be sold anywhere else in England either. If Barcelona do not meet our valuation or even improve on last years offer, then I’m afraid (for you) and happy that he’ll be here another season. His captaincy methods should be questioned but do not forget it was forced upon him at a very young age as well. With a proper pre-season under his belt I think we may just see the best of Cesc Fabregas next season.
The Nasri situation is down to him wanting more money but I think that will get sorted out. I want to see us pushing the boat out for big names but I just can’t see that happening. I do think Arsene has finally realised the fringe players who are never going to make it need to be moved on, and the overpaid youngsters have been told where to go as well. I think we’ll see change in our transfer policy and Arsene this summer, which can only be a good thing, can’t it?
Nasri. This is what we have come to. Good players constantly leaving because they think we lack ambition or wont pay them what others will. Admittedly his body language was all wrong towards the end of the season but given his age and undoubted quality I’d put him on same wages as Van Persi.
Venky – one fan has no power you are correct but 60340 fans have ALL the power and if the board are confronted with dwindling attendances and reduced revenues because once again Wenger has failed to address the issues we have in our club then loyalties will be swept aside and Wenger will be gone – make no mistake the fans power the club and once they are against the manager then thats it.
Sorry but we’ve made no progress. Progress is getting closer to winning things but i’m afraid we’ve actually gone backwards. Just look at the seasons points tally below :-
10/11 – 68 points.
09/10 – 75 points.
08/09 – 72 points.
07/08 – 82 points.
06/07 – 68 points.
05/06 – 67 points.
03/04 – 90 points (League champions).
You’re right, it’s the going rate in football now, sadly. We are lacking ambition and Arsene doesn’t just have to show Nasri we’re showing some, he has to show us also.
the folly of wenger’s failure to invest in quality players is going to haunt him now. Players like nasri and cesc must feel that their talent and careers are going down the tubes. When wenger buys unknown french freebies and average or poor quality centre-backs, he sends a message out loud and clear: We aren’t really serious title contenders!.
We are sliding backwards and need some real quality players NOW!
The way 10/11 season fell apart is particularly abysmal and there is no hiding, even AW faithfuls have serious doubts him now. Witness the slow struggle to cut serious underperformers, e.g. Almunia and Denilson as well as degenerating his own game to a slow, cumbersome ball possessing game lacking pace, creativity and skill. Are you prepared to suffer another season like the last?
Not only was this season a failure in terms of football, but it was also a failure financially. The argument that we are still in debt and should not invest heavily is false economy. Not winning our CL group and progressing to quarter finals was a financial loss. Not finishing 2nd in the league was a financial loss. Not winning the Carling Cup, etc. Buying two inexperienced defenders cost us financially. Which would you prefer…two cheap defenders or one quality defender (i.e Gary Cahill)
As Evra pointed out, nobody takes us seriously. We have become a training ground. You don’t go to Arsenal to win trophies.
A positive is that Arshavin would have got his second season syndrome off his back. Looks like Wenger’s got it right this time. Its defenders who are English or one that is familiar with English Football. Bringing in a koscielny will only bring us where we are now…
Andy, I did actually want Cahill at the start of the season but some of his performances have not impressed me and would rather have Blackburn’s Phil Jones, as he seems to modelled in the ‘John Terry’ mould. We also need cover/competition for Song as he tends to have a few good games then a few shockers, and he is off to the ACON in January. An out-and-out winger is also a preference, in my opinion, as we don’t have someone who just likes to beat a fullback and whip a delivery in, and before you say ‘we don’t have anyone in the box?’, we need to flood the box more as well! And last but not least, a proper number 9 type striker, like Benzema, would be my ideal signing, but we need a striker who is just born to finish, like Eduardo pre-injury. Thanks for commenting.
Wenger has 3 years left to run on his contract. It is not likely at all that he will leave on anyone elses conditions.
The way I see it is that he will be around for at least 3 more seasons.
His legacy will be destroyed if he does not deliver a trophy in this time. That would be 9 years without winning. I’d go as far to say that he needs to deliver a minimum of 1 league title in this time and at present I see us as top 4 and no more let alone title winners.
He needs to step up to the plate when he buys players. There is no inspiration to players or fans if he gets another lad on a free from Ligue 1.
We need presence. We need to have the opposition half beat in the tunnel before the game looking at our line up. Nowadays the opponent can not wait to get “stuck in” to Nasri and Theo where as in the past they weren’t looking forward to facing Pires or Henry.
A couple of real characters in both physical and mental aspects of the game will serve us well. Can you imagine if we went and bought Schweinstiger, Muller and Samba? Height, power, pace, aggression and winners…
