Birmingham 0-3 Arsenal - and one very annoyed Lee Bowyer
As you may have been able to tell, my previous two posts were pre-set to publish over the weekend last Thursday as I was away for a fantastic new years weekend. I hope you enjoyed the finale of the festive season as well.
I took in the game and forgive me for saying this, I was slightly nervous and not at all confident we would grab the points – even when we went ahead we missed chance after chance to make it 2-0 with some faintly ridiculous finishing. And I mean that in a bad way.
Within the first few minutes we saw Roger Johnson pull off the type of tackle he condemned so much back at the Emirates when Jack Wilshere flew into Nikola Zigic, as I said at the time that tackle was a red card and on another day Roger Johnson would have seen red too, however the referee was satisfied with handing out just a yellow card and overall, I thought Peter Walton did a pretty good job.
There were a couple of mishaps, both possibly involving Robin van Persie… the first he fell over, albeit over-dramatically and it really isn’t the type of thing I like to see our players go. The old song “Same old Arsenal always cheating” rang around St.Andrews and its events like that that will never make that song go away. The contact was not enough to knock van Persie over and he was very lucky to open the scoring with the resulting free-kick, and just as lucky not to be adjudged to have handled the ball in his own penalty area later on in the game. As you may be able to tell, I wasn’t best pleased with the guy’s performance. Love him and his attitude most of the time, however, he really does get away with murder.
We really defended well I thought, during the last few games we have played Koscielny and Djourou we are far less susceptible to the long ball over the top and they look to be forming an extremely promising partnership at a time we really need one. I just wonder if it will ward Wenger of bringing in another defender. I think it might. However, our set-piece vulnerability remains.
The game was put beyond doubt when Samir Nasri produced a majestic finish from outside the area, it looked so simple in its execution but it takes a hell of a lot of skill to do that, its like he has that ball on a string sometimes and can just send it wherever he damn well pleases. I wish I could play like he does. A truly wonderful player to watch.
Samir also had a massive part to play in the third, it looked like his Porto goal all over again, however the ball someway made its way into the Birmingham goal via a deflection off a defender, don’t know who, nor care!
Birmingham however, seemed to be a little bit angry for the entire duration of the game, the spiky Samir Nasri got involved in one confrontation and a collection of quite reckless tackles left Cesc, Wilshere and Sagna flailing. The first two tackles were far from necessary and Roger Johnson dived in two footed on Cesc who was lucky to get away with his leg being in one piece – Lee Bowyer however, will steal the show for a show of moronic thuggery.

In a separate incident the thug also took it upon himself to stamp on Sagna’s achillies, as if stamping on his thigh wasn’t enough. Liam Ridgewell also studded Theo Walcott in the small of his back and he would do wisely to take Sagna’s lead – get up and get on with it – it is a far stronger show of strength to see a player do that. Bowyer was subbed after his days destruction was done. There is talk of a six match ban.
Arsenal easily bullied? heh. Not these days.
Back to my earlier point about Robin van Persie getting away with murder: He was clean through on goal, he could have blasted the ball into the roof of the net or curled it around the ‘keeper, however, he decided to chip him. The ball was taken easily by Ben Foster.
The game was teetering on an edge, Arsenal were only one goal up yet one of their more experienced players decided to try something flashy. It is that type of stuff that is just completely unnecessary. If that had been Arshavin who fluffed that attempted chip at 1-0 there would have been a riot, as it is, van Persie gets away with it relatively scot-free. There is the argument that he scored the first (a fluke), however, isn’t that the same rod they use to smash Arshavin over the head? Its double standards in my book and those that claim van Persie is still feeling his way back from injury need awakening – its been two months since he was declared free from injury. He has simply not been physically fit enough (his fault). Like I said, I love his attitude towards the club and think he can produce moments of magical skill, but, I really don’t like the love he gets compared to some of the bile directed at Arshavin.
We have to face Man City in a couple of days and that is now our biggest game of the season so far, they are ahead of us having played more games but are starting to gel and looking like a very strong unit. City are big contenders and the day they win the league, which they will at some point I am sure, it will be a very sad day.
Til tomorrow.

Arsenal News 24/7

What an awfull negative post this is! Even when he isn’t at his best van Persie still is sheer class and a hell lot better than Chamakh will ever be…
Seek therapy.
FFS! Re. your view on RvP: are u Miles Palmer in disguise?
“overall, I thought Peter Walton did a pretty good job.”
the worst ref of the season and this is your opinion on him I’m sorry but after that I just stopped reading.
are you quite sure you are a gooner?
Is this a spuds blog or what
the key word was “opinion”.. say it with me “oh-pin-yun”
i’ve got to write one more thing, i agree with only half your points! so there!
god, i get so frustrated with people.
haha, another. 99% of gooners are disgusting no-it-alls i reckon, i love the squad, but how am i supposed to travel to england and take in a game if i know i’ll be sitting with you miserable lot.

ur post is too continental and balanced dude, locals wont like.
Remove a bit of intelligence, balance and honesty and u’ll be a hit.
I think Martin is coming in for some unair criticism. It is only his opinion and it is backed up by some evidence.
Nobody can think VP wasn’t wasteful in this game. Put through twice only to fluff both opportunities. And his fitness this season is beyond a joke.
A nonchalant landing v Blackburn led to some 3 months on the sideline. And since early November he has been declared fit. However he has never been in shape to compete. Wenger didn’t even take him to Braga as it was deemed better for him to do intensive fitness work rather than play a competitive game! It is a joke. The World Cup was 6 months ago. Don’t get me wrong he is class but is a luxury player due to his fitness concerns
“… Like I said, I love his attitude towards the club and think he can produce moments of magical skill, but, I really don’t like the love he gets compared to some of the bile directed at Arshavin.”
how’s that for a well balanced opinion, its just assumptions and allegations nothing more..
and don’t talk about it being continental because it’s just an opinionated van Persie-bashing.
RVP is a luxury player.
He plays full time for Holland and part time for Arsenal.
If Chamakh had missed those chances, he would have been slaughtered by the fans…after all, he is a Moroccan
Ok emk, lets see your reaction to him if we are 1-0 up, he lamely chips the ball into the keepers hands when clean through when attempting to make it 2-0. Then we lose 2-1
Bet you won’t think like that
the fact is that he made the 1-0 that took us to victory against Birmingham ! So just like I said before it’s all assumptions and allegations nothing more… you obviously dislike the guy well your entitled to your opinion but don’t write crap.
When the much anticipated london Olympics arrive next year I would love to see one of the mens sprinters stay upright when a competitor pulls his arm around behind his back, surely he wouldn’t fall over…would he?
Whats wrong with people? Are all these author rsenal people or Spuds in disguise? Its a known trick among footballers whereby a player running accross you is he pulled by his hand and so doing you manage to circumvent his movement causing a fall. This what happened to Van Persie and he deservedly got a Free kick.
As of handling in the box it was unintended handling as opposed to intentional handling. Its lucky but when did that constitute a sin as the author would have you believe? I am astonished by this sanctimonious fella tearing apart VP and Arsenal on such matters only a Spud supporter would find fault.
Look at Manure, a player like Neville gets away with something as grave as what he did but no big deal made out of it by other people. Here we have a supposedly one of our own tearing VP and the club to pieces. I am in shock: With supporters like these, who needs to hear what Spuds have to say.
van persie is not every gooners cup of tea but he is “spiky”& takes no shit off defenders in particular the bruisers of epl who have intimidated us in past-plus he harries them & is willing to shoot on sight, something we have also lacked-as for six months back-as far as i know this is only his 2nd full 90 minutes.the sharpness(prov no more injuries)will come.make no mistake!as ever,we get little or no protection fromthe refs.nothing new there.as for “the same old arsenal always cheating”this is sung by every crowd arsenal play at..it is purely designed to put doubt into the refs mind because they will look for anything to give them an edge-the thing about it is,i wish arsenakl fans would respond in kind with either the same chant thrown back at them or even better..”same old arsenal taking the piss”!!!
No offence mate but you need to watch that ngame (or watch it for the 1st time maybe huh!) again, or get new glasses. van persie didnt dive, he was pulled back, sure he made the most of it to let that incompetent ref know he had been tugged, but it was a foul. To suggest the ref was good though is hilarious! He was garbage.
The less said about your slating of van persie is quite bizarre? Very odd indeed, one would think you were being ironic, or werent a Gooner.
What a load of crap.
I would like to say firstly we will beat city in a similar way and result to that of chelsea and id like to give b.sagna and a.song a special mention.i know we can praise nasri, fabregas and the likes all day but sagna is a consistent and under talked about steady performer and a favourite of mine,a.song is starting to get his game back and we need him to stay injury free as diaby as talented but inconsistent as he is,is always picking up knocks.i dont want to sound negative but realistic, well as far as i see it anyway,i think its of mega importance we sign 2 quality players in this window and then we will get a major prize or 2.sounds familiar that,i think as a gooner ive said that before about signings, sadly its a usual comment from arsenal fans as old tight dates wenger doesnt spend and i doubt very much he will this time either.the players we have right now could well get the job done but is fab, rvp, walcott, djourou, nasri, song, and other key ones in key areas going to stay injury free for rest of the season, thats hard to imagine with are luck.so much for the lucky old arsenal tag,i think that tag is very much a resident in manchester these days, how they havent lost 4 or 5 is beyond believe.we will take care of them at the emirates though and that will be 1 defeat anyway.
I agree with Martin.
Van Persie is in my opinion the third best striker at Arsenal at the moment with Bendtner and Chamakh (or even Vela, if he ever gets a chance). Sloppy finishing and lacking speed is the headlines for Van persie at the moment. Back when he had Henry at his side we saw some truly magnificient skills from him and back then i thought he was one of the best players at the club. Now i don’t really see him in the starting eleven, but i really hope he will prove my wrong.
