Arshavin contract update – West Ham + More

A few little bits of news for you on this quiet Saturday morning, like I said yesterday there isn’t really anything interesting going around news-wise at the moment. Then again, on the pitch things are looking very good.

Andrey Arshavin’s contract situation has been worrying a few people, just a few weeks ago I wrote about how a new contract was very close to being signed but ultimately the talks fell down. Why this happened is still unclear.

On Wednesday the Daily Mail reported that Arshavin was going to be offered a new contract with a £10,000 a week pay-rise, totalling at £80,000  a week. However, Arshavin already earns this amount per week. The Mail article also claimed that Dennis Lachter is still his agent when Andrey has stated multiple times he no longer has any formal association with him.

Yesterday it was made known to me that talks are due to resume in December and a positive outcome is expected after Arshavin has apparently made it known he wants to stay for another season at least. Now, I can’t 100% stake my life on that last bit, don’t hold me to it. I am though confident he will sign a new deal.

Jack Wilshere and Wojiech Szczesny are set to be handed a nice rise to their pay-packet, the boss said in his press conference yesterday that Szczesny has “expressed a desire to stay” and a contract will be sorted shortly. On Jack Wilshere, it is currently being reported that he will sign a five year deal for £50,000 a week. A humongous amount of money. I’d bet that its going to be an incremental contract but I suppose we will never know the full details.

Looking ahead to this afternoons game against West Ham, I think it will be a big test. Not in quality on the pitch but in attitude, there is no room for another West Brom result and there can be no complacency at all because it will be instantly punished. It wouldn’t be at all surprising to see exactly the same starting eleven as we did at City and everybody in the team will deserve their place, and that is despite the goals from Theo and Bendtner midweek.

We should win this game comfortably, but this is Arsenal we are talking about… Lets keep the good run going.

If you fancy putting a few quid on the game, be aware of the offer currently in place with Paddy Power who will give you a £20 free bet when you stake £10. In the near future I should be able to offer you exclusive betting deals, better odds etc. You will only find these on thegoonblog.com.

A final word on my, what turned out to be, controversial thoughts on Robin van Persie yesterday:  I fully believe that van Persie is an exceptional player when fit… he is just hardly ever available. My point was, how can he just walk back into the side when we have an effective Chamakh, much improved and fit Bendtner, and the guy who has six goals this season – despite being injured for a month and a half – in Theo Walcott? He can’t.

I have nothing at all against van Persie.

Right, Arsenal have a game to go and win.

Til tomorrow.
