With the first game of the new season over it is time for Arsene to be looking for some new blood, again. He has quite often publicly admitted to needing another center-back and there is continuing speculation over the future of ‘keeper Manuel Almunia – who is unsettled due to the consistent links with Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.
Over the past 24-48 hours I have been hearing quite a few mutterings about Phil Jagielka once again, word is that we will go back to Everton with another, much larger bid, than the original £6m we offered them. At the time Everton were interested in doing business with Tomas Rosicky being part of the deal but Arsenal flatly rejected the bid – whether any of this will actually amount to anything remains to be seen as its said that Everton might use Jagielka to raise funds to invest elsewhere in their squad – I have heard a Spurs players name crop up so its just something to keep an eye on.

I’m really not too convinced that we will go for Jagielka, he is overpriced and with a starting birth in the England team’s defence for the foreseeable future that will only add to his price tag, and we know how Arsene likes to watch over the pennies. What is it me nan says? ‘Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves’ – I should encourage Arsene to give me nan a ring, I’m sure she agrees with his financial prudence.
I think Arsenal might just be backing themselves into a corner here, its obvious teams will know that we really do need to recruit a couple of players and prices will reflect this, so whilst Man City’s quiet spell in the market has allowed prices to drop a little, I don’t see how waiting any longer could majorly decrease any fee that we have to pay.
Late yesterday afternoon some comments from the usually quiet Manuel Almunia emerged regarding his current situation at the club, it basically says, “you buy Schwarzer, I’m off”:
‘If somebody comes in, I will have to talk about my future at Arsenal. That is it. I cannot talk now, because the talking would be for nothing. I have to work and if one day I am not good for Arsenal, I will talk. That is no problem. I am very happy here.’
You can’t blame him for being concerned and quite frankly I think that the way the whole goalkeeping situation as a whole has been handled is shameful – the boss went on about not wanting to harm the goalkeepers confidence by coming out outright and commenting on the goalkeeping situation and the continued speculation is going to do just as much damage. We had a bid for Schwarzer turned down, the club ended their interest last week and that meant Schwarzer’s camp responded by handing in a request for a transfer. Its a big mess.
In the Mirror today, John Cross writes that Arsenal are hoping to get Schwarzer in before the game against Blackpool on Saturday and this is a guy who first broke the news of interest in the keeper before the end of last season. He maintains that it is going to go through and he is a trustworthy journalist so I really am inclined to side with that article.
I really don’t know what to think right now, I’m convinced all the Shay Given rumours and claims are complete and utter tosh – City would not sell to a top four club and Arsenal rejected him a couple of seasons back when a deal was very close so I really can’t see that one happening in a million years. It all points to Mark Schwarzer, I have been told numerous times that the deal is on/off/on/off and it has got to the point where you just have to wait and see what occurs – its our of our hands as fans and ultimately, we are powerless and have to hope that the people in the right places make the right call.
Over the next couple of days I will be away but I should still be active on Twitter, and if I can get hold of a decent internet connection you will still have your morning dose of shabby, gloomy and unending transfer news.
Til next time.

Arsenal News 24/7

Agree that Jagielka is overpriced, and I don’t think Everton will sell anyway. But we really do need another CB of his quality. Almunia stating that he hasn’t heard from Wenger about his place with the club shows me that AW has already moved on. I too expect Schwarzer to come our way, but I think it will take the rest of the window to agree a fee.
Arsenal missed many golden chances by leaving the priority issu aside-goal keeper, Spain win cup by Goalkeeper, Chealse by Goalkeeper, Intermilan the same….Holland lose by goalkeeper…..Why Arsenal is alwayes in a deep sleep of seeing a world class goal keeper once and forall,
Why Wenger is told many times about one single agenda????? No money will worth good goalkeeper.. We understand Mannon is good enough why not you try him
Wenger please keep our heart by a good GOALKEEPER, It you dont kill problem in time it will kill you back. Arsenal missed atleast 9 points by goal keeper every season. and many in Champions league,
Arsenal shuld get Shay Given n CB like vidic
The Tottenham player is Dawson, it was only a slight inquiry and nothing was expected from it, the main target is Mexes like I said yesterday, its the whole first choice problem plus Roma need to secure Burdisso.
Am expectin g mr wenger to by new defender and keeper, because this is the problem arsenal have been facing for a long time and if we dont do something to it, it may couse us something big this season
Just spotted this on BBC – Goalkeeper Shay Given can leave Manchester City if he wants to, says boss Roberto Mancini.
More hot air or swings the merry-go-round again as to who we replace Almunia with?
Very dissappointed that we are in the situation we are in with regards GK and CB
We’ve had all summer to sort out. I know it isn’t like going to a supermarket and putting stuff in a trolley but 2 months is enough.
Maybe if the boss spent less time at WC for french tv then we wouldn’t be in this predicament
Martin – can you find out when the yearly financials are to be released??
Going by the november half yearlys the release date was mid feb. So would be expecting anytime soon??
No doubt we have made money and Wenger gets a percentage..
I don’t actually think we’re as badly stocked at the back as people are making out. Koscielny was outstanding v Liverpool and Djourou and Nortveidt are there behind them. The latter has earnt great experience in germany which would obv help him in a physical sense so its not like he’s a complete rookie.
Almunia is right to say those things..Schwarzer isn’t in his league – period. If we get Schwarzer i’d eat my season ticket. Schwarzer is injured, 37..it’s ridiculous. Almunia made mistakes last season yes but his are magnified ten-fold. Remember when we put four past schwarzer so easily on the last day of the season, the opening Arshavin goal? how that’s so conveniently been swept under the carpet. If Almunia made that exact error we’d still be talking about it today. Schwarzer is NOT the answer.
My main worry is our indirectness, against tough opposition in the premier league we never seem to be able to break through and do anything in the final 3rd, it’s all happy passing and possession football without any end product. To be honest I think we need a more direct offensive player who actually has the balls to have a shot on goal. Or we’re going to see plenty of games like liverpool over and over again, dominating posession and going 1-0 down, Simply because the other side is more direct. We’re not as creative as everyone makes out. Maybe against shit sides we are, but that won’t cut it.
Rock…but Djourou has hardly played in 2 years. He is permanently injured. We cannot go nto the season past the transfer dealine relying on him and Nordveidt. If Vermaelten/Koscielny pick up an injury or a 3match ban we are screwed. It would be suicide to not buy a solid, ‘no-nonsense’ defender with prem league experience. I’d go for Cahill personally. He’s young, tough and can play. After that we can have as many under 18 defenders as we like, but we absolutely have to have a mroe experienced player.
I’m not denying we need one as we are short number-wise at the back, but to spend ridiculous money on cahill or jagielka is just not needed. I’d take that guy spahic to be honest. He’s two footed, strong, tough in the tackle and experienced. 5m for him would be good business.
I’m just saying that my main worry is not being able to break down teams. Really hope that’s not our downfall this season as too often we don’t look like scoring. Back end of last season and looked like nothing changed against liverpool. We just can’t seem to create chances unless we’re playing pompey or wigan at home.
I agree with the poster and schwarzer mishap on closing day last year against us. Also note he made 2 errors in WC that led to goals.
Not being funny but he spent majority of his career at boro who shipped plenty. He has never really been a top class keeper and buying him at 37 as a stop gap could have adverse consequences
wenger should definetely get a cb for the season a head laurent look promising not afraid of any tackle he is a brave lad wenger should either shay given or schawarzer both of them top class goal keepers schwarzer had ten clean sheat last season thats not bad comparing to almunia
Rock our problem breaking down teams is down to the Diabys and Denilsons. They do just enough once a month to justify keeoing them but then give away shitty goals by not being arsed to chase back and playing the ball short. I do agree this needs to be rectified as it is this which exposes our back 4 in the first place, but that aside we must get an experiecned defender – ideally with experience in the prem. I’d say c £15m on Jag/Cahill (if we can get tehm for tht) would be money well spent. tbh I (and I think most fans) would be happy with another Kolo type signing but right now feel Arsene needs to spend big(gish) to give Cesc etc the team he deserves to play in.
Gooner – are you saying Arsene is on the take? FUCK OFF CUNT.
is it that hard to believe wenger may have a profit based bonus in his contract you fucking spastic..have a word with yourself before sitting behind your pc being the big man..
and its big (ish) you illiterate text speaking prick
You implied he was on the take. And if we are really going to get pedantic over spelling and grammar;-
1) it is biggish. I suggest you check your spelling in a dictionary.
2) I am an illiterate, text-speaking prick. Please note the comma, hyphen and full-stop. Additionally, there is an extra comma between your “big(ish)” [sic] and “you…”
Oh. Please fuck off cunt,(note correct usage of punctuation, upper and lower cases, as well as demotic Anglo-Saxon).

LMFAO! OOPS! Gooner am I a text speaking prick too?
Arsene Wenger :
1. Go and get Hugo lloris.
2. Go and get M.Sakho.
3. Go and get Mertsackers. (German I’tnl)
Ohh dear **NERD ALERT**..I would have stayed and read all your post but I got bored and fell asleep..
What you doing up late ? are you trawling Arsenal forums being Wenger’s over protective guardian or blaming the evils of the world on Denilson and Diaby ? or are you playing Championship Manager and spending 15 Million on Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka..? Its clear you have no idea about football from your posts so I’ll just leave you to spout the word “cunt” like its new and show yourself up for the dickhead Asenal fan we all know and hate.
If you go back and read I only ever said “Wenger gets a percentage” which is a valid and sensible suggestion.
Your tactical breakdown about Diaby and Denilson is laughable at best and shows you have no knowledge of the game, still you do spout the word “Cunt” quite well, ironic really considering..
Thanks for the rectification, but I’ll take your other points one by one.
Tactical Breakdown of D&D: Do they track back? No. Denilson was at fault for several lapses – notably against Barca last year. Diaby consistently plays the ball short/slowly allowing possession to be lost. With their inability to provide a tackling threat this exposes our defence. This was apparent all last season and on Sunday.
If you did bother to read any post, you’d note I said it would be beneficial if any player coming in had experience of the premier league. However, I also stated that I’d be more than happy – like most other Arsenal fans – with another Kolo type. I don’t own Championship mananger. I find such things incredibly boring.
As for your hilarious ‘Nerd alert’…Oh, you are a wag aren’t you? The long, winter evenings must just fly by. As you are obviously aware I pointed out your grammatical errors purely because you incorrectly stated I had misspelt/misspelled (both are valid terms by the way), the word biggish. The inclusion of the second g is covered in year 3 of the National Curriculum.
Cunt is not new word, as I clearly state. It does apply to you though.
As for me being a dickehead Arsenal fan, at least I have more invention than to call myself ‘Gooner’. Took a while to think that one up didn’t it?
Bored..your knowledge and understanding of football is poor and I am not wasting any more time on you.
Aw. Does Nerd mean knows more than you in general?
Abou Diaby in his early career was hampered by injuries and not being in a settled position or team and so early on did not have a specified role or function, he was used to hold the midfield at times and also to play behind a lone striker so he never settled into a required function, since last season and the switch to 4-3-3 he has also been used in each of the 3 midfield roles, generally one is a holder(Song), one is a passer and also defensive pivot incase or forming a 2 screen and becoming a 4-2-1-3 (Denilson) and one supports the strikers and wide forwards (Cesc) so esentially Diaby has struggled to find his game, you need to settle into your game and stay there and learn to become a good player, he is ideally suited to the Cesc role but Cesc plays there so he has to learn and adapt and we need to give him time.
Denilson is mainly switched between the Holder and the secondary pivot/passer and again this can cause him to mix up his game incorrectly, on the occasion they highlight him strolling back he is caught between thinking he can stroll back and is not the holder therefore its not as urgent, its all about young players learning their role and the change or formation last year added to this, its a policy Wenger decided to go with instead of buying specified players for specified roles.
In Abou Diaby he saw height, raw talent, pace and skill, he thought he could use that in the way we play, his development was slowed but also he needed to learn his role
In Denilson he saw a player that made clever interceptions and was a good passer and worker.
Even now if you check Denilson’s stats he is high on interceptions, the media highlight maybe his strolling back and it gets thrown around too easy but you need to understand the game and the bigger picture.
Diaby completed 50 out of 52 passes successfully vs Liverpool. He kept possession beautifully and both he and Jack were very effective in the 1st half as the double pivot
Exactly and from memory he has not even played many games in the 4-3-3 as the holder, so again its a learning process for him, Jacks natural role is the Cesc position but again he is learning to play a new position, its the intricacies of a midfield. When Wenger went with policy youth, each and every player had to learn and grow instead of buying a ready made player, once these players mature they will be multi functional. Its lazy fans and the media that get caught up with labelling players.
