Yesterday, it is said an agreement was close between Man City goalkeeper Shay given and Fulham – if this goes through Mark Schwarzer will make the short move across London to join Arsenal. It looks like it will be a loan deal, not a permanent one.
The Daily Mail ran with a somewhat unsubstantiated story about the possible transfer and with people in the football world, journalists and former players alike, saying Mark is on his way to Arsenal it makes you think that the likelihood of it happening is more likely than not. Someone also said to me Sky Sports ran a similar story but I can’t confirm this, I was working all day.
I received a mail early on yesterday claiming that a deal between Man City and Shay Given was very close and in its final stages before completion, Mark Hughes comments after the Fulham draw on Saturday did little to dispel noises that Given was indeed on his way: -
‘Mark Schwarzer has made it clear that he would like to go to Arsenal so we are trying to look at other options. I’m always interested in quality players and Shay Given is a quality player. Make of that what you will. But I have said that if we can’t get anyone else in, Schwarzer will have to stay.’
Speaking yesterday, Arsene Wenger said:
“It is dead at the moment, but maybe not finished”
I would think, and I’m speculating on this bit, that the only issue would be wages – Fulham probably couldn’t afford the wages that Shay is on now at Man City so some sort of compromise; AKA a pay-cut, will have to take place. Alternatively City would have to subsidize the wages so Fulham don’t turn themselves bankrupt by trying to pay wages they can’t afford.
One thing that might hurry this along is that the keeper who looked able to fill Schwarzer’s sizable shoes, the young David Stockdale, has suffered ankle ligament damage and looks like spending up to two months on the sidelines – Fulham have no other goalkeeping option with the quality to play in goal in the Premier League so they have to look elsewhere, if they can’t find a goalkeeper, or the Shay Given deal somehow manages to fall through then as Mark Hughes said; no move will happen.
However like I said, it seems that a deal is very close for Given to move to Fulham on loan – I’m expecting a bit of news tomorrow that hinges on an event in the morning. I’m working so won’t be able to update the site if this event happens (and no, its not a medical), I will probably come back with an update in the late afternoon.
Now choose to believe this or not – this is not being ‘reported’ as fact and this is just me passing you something that has been made available to me. It does fit with what seems to be happening, so I thought it might be of interest.
For a deal to materialise I do think that steps have to be made today so it might get quite interesting, one thing I do not buy is the notion of Manuel Almunia leaving the club now – he was the last to leave the pitch at Blackburn and he did throw his shirt/gloves/armband into the crowd but its most likely he was just thanking them for their support. He had a very good game.
So with less than 48 hours left in the transfer window lets see what happens….

Arsenal News 24/7

What makes gunner fans think Schwarzer can do a better job
than Alu?You never know although on paper the Fulham gk has a better track record.
The thing is the gk wouldn’t have become such a big problem over the years had Wenger taken action immediately after the cl final. By then the decay had set in.
Anyway it aint too late and if Wenger wants the gunners to win the big trophies he shd indulge less in pretty soccer and play like the Blackburn game week in and out.
Play Like Blackburn Why?
If U Carnt Remeber We Won Playing
‘The Pritty Soccer’
Rather That Route 1 :L
Dumb Guy!!
Arsenal need a world class goalie, but I don’t for once think that Shwarzer is it. He’s good and marginally better than Almunia, and the hapless Fabiansky, but he may not solve the problem which may lead to fans calling for another goalie during the season. If he comes, I hope he plays out of his skin, because it will look stupid to change a goalie with a not so good one. I wish Alminia the best, but he had five seasons to prove to everyone he was good, but failed.
LOL!!
are you being funny? what has blackburn won playing like that?
so you’d rather watch samba the bulldozer than varmaelen, may be wenger should sell arshavin and replace him with el hadj diouf.
no no no, sack wenger and give the job to big sam.
we will surely win the league
BTW,referee will love us playing like blackburn cause we won’t get away with it.
i will miss almunia
c’mon peoples, read what he’s saying properly, he may not be a gunner but what he’s saying isn’t as bad as you guys are thinking, he’s not saying we should play like blackburn everyweek, he’s saying we should play as resiliently as we did in that blackburn game every week, that performance on saturday was the old arsenal, gracefull arsenal but the tough arsenal, not the tippy tappy Arsenal, i actually agree with him…..hopefully this the begining of a trully new era
i guess i do want schwarzer…..why
(1) so it’ll be the 1st in a long time we’ve gotten all our transfers targets bagged in one summer, we haven’t done that since we were in highbury
(2) organisation, schwarzer is by no means a better shot stopper than almunia, but then shot stopping isn’t what we’re looking for from our goalkeeper, we need one that’s gonna organise and command his area on the set piece, someone who can make a 10ft jump in the air and catch the ball clean or take out everthing infront of him
(3)knowledge, hey…look what being around him has done for young kid like stockdale who actually looks the business, i want that for our young keepers, let Szczesny hang around him for a couple of years….it could be exactly what he needs
mannnn I think Almunia did a great job against Blackburn, but we can’t be sure how long his form will last, he might not perform well against tougher teams, but I surely would be sad if he leaves now, because he loves this club a lot and is an honest lad!
i don’t have sympathy for Almunia. first of all he’s not sincere,he thinks he has divine right to remain arsenal’s first choice keeper. he took that number one jersey off lehmann and he failed. he’s presence in goal cost us points.if he’s good then why can’t he stay and fight for his place? cudiccini is better than him but he settled as second choice at tottenham.we have won nothing since he took the jersey and now its time for change.

Seriously what are you chatting about??? Nobody anywhere has said we should play like Blackburn …. ALL THAT WAS SAID -> Arsenal should play like Arsenal did against Blackburn to grind out the result.
wenger should stop being soft and put him in his place. new keeper or not, almunia shouldn’t be our first choice. after few good games we will go back to square one again.
manone will do a better job, almunia and his polish friend should pi** off. they are both no good for arsenal and they know it.

out of top 10 premiership teams, he’s the only one without a single international cap. wenger is the only person in the world that believes almunia is a top keeper.how come spain never even called him for friendly games? because he’s simply not good enough.
how long did massimo taibi stay at man utd? fabien barthez?
the wigan defeat should’ve the last game for fabianski.
sometimes it seems like wenger doesn’t want to win anything cause this guy shouldnt be ahead of manone.
Only 2 days to get a GK left now. I sure hope Wenger pulls the trigger on this Schwarzer deal. Its funny how one errorless game from Almunia causes sum Gooners memory loss. How many own goals did he have last season again?
Schwarzer was the only keeper last year to be awarded the player of the month award, and only conceeded 5 more goals than our keepers did all season. With Fulham!! Who ever says that he would not make a difference to Arsenal or is no better than Almunia either know’s nothing about Schwarzer or football in general.
Schwarzer performed all last season like Almunia did against Blackburn!
If/when he arrives (I hope he does, and I belive he will), Big Al will rightly find himself as number 2, meaning the polish boys will both be going out on loan. This is the best thing that could happen to this Arsenal team right now.
We need a better keeper than Almunia.Almunia is great but I believe Schwarzer will make a differnence in a good way and he will also improve
Almunia has has 3 years to prove he is good enough. He hasnt.Schwarzer may not be a Hart,Given or Cech but is much better than both Almunia and Hapless Flappy. So to sign a keeper who is better than these two must be welcomed
We’ll see what happens, we have less than 24 hours, and although it seems that it’s unlikely that Arsenal will sign Schwarzer, don’t give up the hope
But to finish with the transfer on time, we need Fulham to find MS’ replacement immient. In the next 18 hrs.
so almunia it is then, god help us.1
I find it a bit of a shambles that we’ve left it until now to sign a GK.
We’re clearly on the market for one as we’ve been to fulham more than once with a bid.
My frustration is why ONLY schwarzer?
It is naïve to think we have this world class keeper needing 2 more years experience in chesney. Didn’t we all think the same of fabianski?
If we bought a decent international keeper for 10-15mil and chesney turns out like we hope its then a decision on who to sell of the 2!
It would almost serve us right if we failed in this bid and were left with a confidence shot almunia who again will concede upto 10 points
