So at last the official site have confirmed the signing of Sebastian Squillaci – a day after Arsene Wenger confirmed the signing in his press conference yesterday.
From what I know about him he will bring a different style of defending to the center-back partnership. He seems to be an aggressive, strong and combative defender and the type we have been crying out for for a long time – what he may lack in natural athleticism he more than makes up for in strength and aggressiveness – and the ability to head the ball.
Sadly he will be missing from the squad to face Blackburn tomorrow – and he would have helped us deal with the inevitable aerial bombardment – but the beauty of our center back situation now is that there is strong competition, even Thomas Vermaelen will have to be looking over his shoulder if he suffers so much as a lapse in his form.
I’m really happy with the signings made so far this summer, yes I do think certain situations could have been handled a lot better and we could be in a better situation than we are now in terms of recruitment but something we probably all have to consider is that the club are approaching transfers in the way that they do for a reason – Squillaci was signed up pretty quickly, contrast that with the Mark Schwarzer situation and it is almost flip reversed. There will be a reason we haven’t signed him yet and I don’t think its a lack of interest or even money, Fulham want to make it as difficult as possible – partly in my opinion due to him being Mohammad Al Fayed’s favorite player – and when push comes to shove they can’t turn down 3-4 million for a player of 37 years of age.
There has been quite a bit of a fuss made over a few words Arsene said in his press conference – news sources leading with stories about him having ended his business this transfer window – this is not the case Arsene has certainly not ruled out another arrival.
There has been speculation all summer over who will be the long-term Arsenal number one, Lucasz Fabianski has not only blown his chance, more launched it into oblivion so the only man left is the unsettled and understandably miserable looking Manuel Almunia. He has said in the press a couple of times now how the speculation has affected him, Arsene has replied with strong comments of his own – how players must learn how to deal with speculation and get on with their job.
I just don’t know how we can carry on with a goalkeeper who’s confidence has been smashed to smithereens – then again, sort the communication issue between the center backs and the goalkeeper and he could be a keeper reborn. To save on the flapping when crosses come in turn him into a stay at home goalkeeper and straight away the confidence in him may well just start returning.
From what I gather there is no deal close with Schwarzer – though once the ball starts rolling it will start traveling at quick speed almost instantly. So lets see how the situation pans out over the next three or four days.
Right now we have had a good summer and a good start to the season. One signing and a win tomorrow could turn it into a great summer, and great start to the season.
til tomorrow.

Arsenal News 24/7

Squillaci offer was also tabled really quick so MS should be done by next week. But will go as usual to the dotted line
. REally hope we dont pay for that tomorrow. BTW great post Martin. Keep us updated.
cheers
Can i just say that i’m a member of Arsenal-Mania, and i know that some posters are giving us a bad name. Can i just say that your blog, along with JamieDalton, Darren-arsenal1, and young-guns are rated highly by most on the forum. Again, i apologise on behalf of some the “lesser” posters.
Cheers Irish Gunner. Just a few idiots but some of the stuff said about Jamie was shameful
i agree, but there are a few idiots on arsenal-mania indeed, but please make him aware that the majority don’t feel that way
Cracking update martin.
Let’s just wait and see til tuesday how we go with GK situ.
I think he’ll be playing against Bolton when we line up in Sep.
The CB situation is now very healthy and I feel Manuel would be an excellent no 2.
The season could be great
i’m to lazy to read the wenger article again, but didn’t he say that domestically the transfer window is shut for arsenal?
also, i wouldn’t mind seeing a new keeper but i really think almunia has all the great qualities, just needs to have more confidence and like you say, stop flapping at crosses. if the boss sticks with him, i would fully understand. he must see something in training, we’ve seen all the good in almunia, just too much bad when a cross is delivered!
if anything i’d say the most important aspect of getting a new keeper is to appease the fans. but personally i think we are strong either way
What if Almunia makes mistakes tomorrow that cost us the 3 points? what will Wenger do next?
@ Nasri75 what if vermalean scores a own goal tomorrow,and we lose? do we start calling for wenger to buy a new defender, and slag vermalean off ?what if fabrigas misses a pen and cost us 3 points do we, call for a new captain and demand wenger buys a replacement?
what if alimunia saves 2 penalties and 3 blasters, and we win 1.0?..life is full of “ifs”
good luck tomorrow alimunia and arsenal, you’ll need it with our so called fans.
I’d never heard of this website until this transfer window, but i want to see your content after the window shuts and how much info you get, because so far, all the information has been well educated guesses as i see it.
the only source that is credible is YoungGuns, he seems to check and double check before publishing, you and many wildfires on twitter seem to have random guesses, you said schwazer was in the bag a month ago, yet nothing. you haven’t learned, if your source says something, get another source to verify before announcing it!
you guys are taking advantage of the vacuum where the club says nothing and you try fill it, shame on you.
Hi peeps, started reading your blogs a couple of weeks back now & must say really enjoy a balanced view. The way some carry on it’s as if AW is a mass murderer ffs. Yes mistakes have been made but i feel this summer defensive areas have been addressed & as you say i’m hoping the GK position should be sorted. My own view is that if noody comes in then Tech9 should be played & to hell with the consequences. He will be miles better than what is supposedly our first 2.
Keep up the good work m8
Good stuff Martin, keep it up.
BTW Fulham don’t need a replacement keeper, as Stockdale is a good enough goalie. Hughes just being a stubborn C**t
Wonder if MS will play for them this weekend
cant agree more with questionable sources…..
about the goalkeeping situation, it’s actually a complicated thing to assess almunia. almunia does the following mistakes
1) Flap at crosses, corner kicks, long balls
2) Gets beaten by shots that he should have saved (ngog, drogba at stamford bridge last season,)
3) Poor judgement at times of when to come out and when to stay at his line (gave away silly penalty at Old trafford last season and many other examples)
….he flaps at crosses which is clearly what scwarzher doesnt do…other than that, i dont many goalkeepers can offer more than almunia….if u noticed, ever since kolo(very vocal center back) left, almunia has been making a continuation of mistakes because i think there’s hardly any communication between the center backs and keeper..TV is a good defender but why doesnt he and the others head the ball back to almunia when long balls are played…that will tidy up the situation and end the opponents attack immediately..i think there is little communication from vermaelen and gallas was quite last season…poor old almunia left standing and expected to block every attempt on goal..
GK like marchetti and the ajax guy are not good enough i feel….they dont have amazing reflexes and will be beaten easily as well….scwarzher is a special one…if he comes okay, other than that almunia is good enuf
I sure hope we get a keeper by tuesday. Almunia looks So shaky its nerve racking. He might have the talent but he doesn’t have the head for the job. If we do bring in a new GK it looks like the only possible candidate is Schwarzer at this point. I hope your right and an agreement can be reached in time.
So what if a goalie is bought tonight all i just want to know is what gonna happen to the 4goalies we had already and also what team in this planet earth will pick up any of ur goaliee when it comes on selling them out before Tuesday the transfer deadline absolutely no one not after wrongly bashing them all, making it hard for buyers to think of even getting closer.You know what, u guys thinks like a kid sometimes.Imo lets forget buying anymore save the cash and root for Alumina i know he is a pretty good goalie all we need is a strong defenders to protect him.peace out
Martin I think you have a top blog and I echo the sentiments of Irish Gooner about the information you, JD, DA, YG, and John Cross provide. However, I think this post is short of actual info. You think Schwarzer will sign is a strong statement, as we know you have sources in the biz. So, what makes you think he will sign, that Almunia has shaken confidence? Surely you must have more to go on than that – perhaps even a mention of Cross’ comments would do, but I would prefer knowing a bit more of the reasonings that make up the underpinnings of your statement. Otherwise, cheers.
@questionable sources
Well check the archives, I have no history at all of making stuff up to take advantage of any situation. I respect your right to an opinion of course but couldn’t disagree more.
I do try to cross-check things but sometimes that is just not possible. Things can change quickly, look back through Arseblog’s archives to find the “exclusive: Senderos signs for Everton” – Are you gonna call for him to cross check his information and start judging him on that?
People are always going to get things wrong.
I trust my sources, and hopefully I am going to be writing something about a deal on the commercial front soon. At this stage I can’t say it will be 100% definite but when its not about signings hopefully you will have more faith in what I write.
But, by that last sentence it seems your mind is made up.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.
@irishgooner
He knows mate just had a chat with him!
American Gooner: Its not based on any information its just my opinion mate. I honestly think he is going to sign.
cheers martin
99.9% of what Arseblogger writes is done when he is off his tits on mojitos to be fair, I am not sure he is the best blog to compare with….
@PEAD,
you have realy said it all and i agree with you totaly, i’m so surprise why our defenders always expose almunia so easily, we are very weak aerialy cos our defenders hardly head the ball away from set pieces, only for the whole blame to be droped on almunias doorstep, iam not saying almunia is any david seaman, or oliver kahn but he is not as bad as people paints him
@ Martin
Difference is Arseblog has built up a reputation of getting things right, we all knew the Senderos deal was in the works, he eventually went in January,at least that was close and he was one of the few to report it, this Schwazer thing has been in, then out, in, then out, how quickly do things have to change from someone having a medical to someone not coming, over 1 month?
Why can’t you cross check? How can we have faith in the blog if it is getting it wrong or speculating or reprinting media prints?
I just hope you give us a reason to put trust in this blog after the window to make up for the blunders.
What makes you think this tho,you must have a reason.
got a gut feeling shay given will push through a move to arsenal 11th hour stylee.
lets get fingers crossed 4 a new goalie.almunia and fabianski are so shaky.
Wenger is smart – He still wants Schwazer but also wants Almunia to be no 2 Keeper.
So he’ll wait until the last day of the window and sign him so Almunia hasn’t any time to piss off and leave us with Fabianski as no. 2.
Besides what’s was the point in signing MS a month ago? We would have been paying his wages while he was still injured.
I think he may be just coming back into the Fulham squad this or next week.
Wenger will get his man when Traore frees up even more $$$ this week.
The one thing that I’m not sure about is the Ramsey situation.
Anybody got an idea of how he’s tracking? Will he be included of the 25 considering the amount of time he’ll be out this year?
@Questionable Sources
Because there are only a few genuine sources you can get information from, or have access to that information, I happen to know one of them.
I was the first person to say that there was going to be a statement on Cesc Fabregas from Arsenal over on Twitter. Funnily enough, about 20 minutes later there was a statement released.
well,i dont know wat arsene wenger is doin,he keeps sayin that he’s aiming for the title,but we cant do wit almunia in post,schwarzer would be a terrific signing & the sooner the deal is done the better before its a 6th successive fruitless season.keep up the good work.peace out
just to clarify almunia and his goal keeping exploits to compare- remember back to when seaman was in goal for us and think of the ammount of mistakes in his career …..
now take almunia he almost equalled seamans career score of mistakes last season alone .
do not compare seaman and almunia. it is like comparing earth and the sun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwe
@questionable sources
Martin’s source is clearly credible but I think your taking your Schwarzer frustrations out on the wrong person.
It’s not easy to lend your name to other peoples information. You run the risk of making yourself look stupid if you get it wrong. Martin runs a very respected site so he’s not about to jepordise it by “making stuff up”
Also, how do you check a sources information if you only have one source?
