Will Robin van Persie really be back in early April?

Welcome to another slow news day, Ive put off writing the blog ’til later on today but it hasn’t made much difference though the headlines will all be about Robin van Persie, our crocked Dutchman.

If you remember, the initial prognosis by the Dutch national team doctor was that Robin had just sprained a few ligaments and maybe tore one. Either way, they said surgery would not be required and he would be fine after a few weeks – they either misdiagnosed it on a massive scale or plain lied to the club. As it turned out, all but one ligament in his ankle had been ruptured and he needed surgery – add to that the small matter of one of the form players in Europe was expected to remain on his arse for the remainder of the league campaign.

So, would you excuse me when I laugh hysterically when I hear Bert van Marwijk claiming van Persie could be back as soon as the start of April, what do he and the Dutch doctors know? Nothing. All he achieves is putting unnecessary pressure on a player who always rushes back from injury, leading to more injuries; van Persie is hardly the luckiest guy with injuries is he? He said:

“I spoke to him on the phone last week and he is improving all the time and feeling better, I hope that he will play at the beginning of April and he feels this is maybe possible.

“He is a very important player for me so it is very important for me that he is fit,”

Oh how nice, ‘he is a very important player for me’, and he isnt for Arsene Wenger and Arsenal? Van Persie was in the form of his life when he got injured in what I must add was a useless pointless international friendly, where ironically, most of his worst injuries tend to occur. I really couldn’t give a toss about Holland or how they do at the world cup, he is an Arsenal player and that should be his priority.

If he is back in April (the Boss ruled out an early April return just a small matter of days ago, fancy that!), it is more likely to be the end of the month, he will then need match fitness and we already know the Dutchman is a notoriously slow starter to a season so he isn’t exactly going to come out all cylinders blazing because that is just how he is, it takes him a lot of time to get into his stride. It is quite annoying how he should be approaching form again as soon as the World Cup starts, lets take that on the chin when it arises.

A fit van Persie would do wonders for us right now, we have a run of games left this season that we need to win, we need to win every single one of them and a player like van Persie who can score goals out of nothing is priceless considering the absence of form with Andrey Arshavin in the latter part of the season. It could be said, his form has dropped ever since Russia failed to qualify for the World Cup, though the bloke has been carrying injuries all season and playing out of position. Still, he needs to get back fit and sort himself out.

Anyway, onto other stuff – theres not much of it. The boss has seemed to totally disregard the FA Cup in his latest comments, and whilst its probably not as prestigious as it once was, its no excuse for failing in it time and time again. Would he say this if we had won it last season?

“There are two main trophies in our job – the Champions League and the Premier League; today, we can still win them both. In addition, the club is in a healthy situation and we have a fantastic young side.”

This doesn’t change the fact we want to win stuff. This next bit annoys me:

“What other people think is less important – what happens here is the deciding factor, along with how much belief we put into our game. We are in a fantastic position and it is now about how we turn it our way.

“I believe Arsenal fans can be very proud of their club, and that is at least what we try to give them – pride.”

If those ‘people’ are the fans Arsene, then it does matter – its not your club, its ours. It is comments like this that just add fuel to certain journalists and bloggers fires. Its hard to say we have improved from last season, its been more about the other teams dropping more points, the side have shown some serious character though and despite being battered three times this season by the sides above us, we are still there snapping at their heels.

Right, thats it for today. Hopefully there will be a bit of team news tomorrow.

Til then.
