Transfer deadline day live: Matuidi and Chamakh deals possible 85

Posted on August 31, 2009 by Martin @ thegoonblog.com

So here we are again, its not that long ago I was here throughout the Andrey Arshavin saga. Well, thats what it feels like anyway.

You can get all the rumours, confirmation of signings and general deadline day talk right here on The Goon Blog.

The most likely signings are Blaise Matuidi and Marouane Chamakh and the most likely departure is one Philippe Senderos who at one point, had a sealed move to Everton.

The media will be screaming at us to strengthen after Sp*rs have delved into the transfer market yet again and sealed the signing of Kranjar a one time Arsenal target.

Vermaelen has been our only arrival but a class arrival, he has not put a step wrong so far this season. Another arrival like that wouldn’t go amiss. My preference is DM cover for Song who has the ACN in January/February.

Let the madness commence…

00:00am: Rumours about Matuidi have re-emerged and its thought he is worth in the region of 6-8 million. We need another midfielder as cover for Song. There is nothing on Chamakh so far but Wenger returning with a take it or leave it offer to Bordeaux for him would not surprise me.

00:15am: We will see what the morning headlines and press have to offer within the next hour. Meanwhile the Eduardo row is getting stupid now. UEFA are treating him like a naughty schoolboy “There are no exceptional circumstances that would justify a plea for mercy.” Oh please. They will have the cane out or have him up on a murder charge next.

Meanwhile….the Croatian football president has gone starko.

00:45am: Goal.com reports that St. Etienne must lower their valuation of Matuidi for a deal to be done. Hardly reliable though.

01:05am: Commenter going under the name of Dave Walsh has said Chamakh has been sighted in London:

friend of mine who works in a top london hotel spotted Gazidas with chamakh.so hopefully something will happen.

Treat that as you want. As ‘Dave’ hasn’t returned I wouldn’t take it as gospel!

01:17am: Just so you know, UEFA meet to discuss the fate of Eduardo today. The Daily Mail have stuck up a ludicrous article ‘naming and shaming’ divers in the English game. No mention of Rooney or Gerrard… Fancy that? Cretins.

Just a bit of fun…Does Chamakh look a bit like Ronaldo to you?

See the similarity or not? Leave a comment by clicking here…

02:00am: Right, i’m going to get some sleep now whilst its quiet. It may well be a very different story at 7-8am tomorrow morning!

Keep your comments flying in, it seems there are a lot of nocturnal gooners on the comments! Click here to join in the discussion.

07:53am: I’m back and there is not much new news for us yet I am afraid. I wouldn’t fear though because the less the press pick up on the better for us price wise. Looks like Pompey are going to go barmy today though, will they go for Senderos I wonder?

08:25am: John Cross – The Mirror’s chief sports writer has heard from an agent that the international transfer window is now closed so no deals from outside of the UK can be done. Not sure that is quite correct…

Bank holiday round-up: Wenger misunderstood & Eduardo the scapegoat 3

Posted on August 31, 2009 by Martin @ thegoonblog.com

Oh the joy of the British press.

“I like that [focus on the diving problem], I believe that is a quality in this country. In some countries it is a quality to dive. I’m still more proud to be part of England where they fight against it.

“But there are other points that are for me more urgent. There are players who play only to make fouls who are never punished and they get a result out of the game. That for me is more anti-football than a player like Eduardo who did what Eduardo did.”

Que headlines declaring that Wenger has said United employed anti-football against us.

You have got to laugh sometimes, he is just criticising deliberate, cynical fouling. It is part and parcel of the game but when it goes over the top it can be very unpleasant indeed. In Denilson we have a player who is good at this deliberate fouling lark to break up the play so we are not totally innocent in all this but all Wenger is trying to say is that tactics like that, going overboard, are a bigger problem than diving.

Speaking of diving….Ashley Young midweek? Silence. That Celtic player sent off for diving yesterday?

I saw this fantastic piece on Untold Arsenal that suggests the stink kicked up by the media on the Eduardo situation was partly due to covering up and taking the focus away from the West Ham fans violence and pitch invasions on Tuesday night in their Carling Cup game with Millwall. It kind of makes sense don’t you think? Deflecting the focus off an unsavory incident with the Olympics coming up in a few years and a World Cup bid in the pipeline. It is slightly worrying that the situation with Eduardo has had more said about it than the disgusting, stupid, idiotic, moronic twats that marred a cup game last week.

Leaving all that behind now and the transfer deadline is looming ever closer, I’ve not really been talking about it much, thats partly due to the lack of stories around I suppose. Thinking back to the January deadline day, it still doesn’t feel too long ago. I think we will buy someone and we might see a loanee or two dispatched across the country for a couple of months to gather experience in the lower leagues. Mark Randall still may leave on loan, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has gone on loan, as has Jay Simpson. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Nacer Barazite go out on loan today or tomorrow.

I don’t think our need for new players is as strong as it was as its clear this squad can challenge, but could we do with a bit of cover in key areas..? Yes, in my opinion. There is also the situation with Phillipe Senderos who could still leave.

We are due a few summer deadline day deals. I think we will get them. It will start hotting up by this evening I should think. Will Wenger dip in the market for midfield cover? Will he go back with a take it or leave it offer for Chamakh?

The release of this article on Arsenal.con is quite timely…don’t you think?

I will be back from midnight with the live transfer deadline day ticker so make sure you are back for that. I have a feeling something is going to happen.

Let the madness commence…

Wenger not to be punished for sending off – United fall-out 10

Posted on August 30, 2009 by Martin @ thegoonblog.com

Morning all,

well yesterday was interesting, through pure stupidity we managed to lose a game we were winning comfortably. We conceded a penalty that wasn’t, but Almunia seemed to want to do everything to convince the ref it was a penalty by flying off his line to the feet of the already falling Wayne Rooney and Diaby seemed to get confused as to what end he was supposed to be playing towards.

United 2-1 Arsenal

We bossed the game in the first half and Arshavin opened the scoring just after being felled in the area by Darren Fletcher, a clear penalty to everyone but Mike Dean. The move still resulted in a goal though, Arshavin was given the ball 30 years out and hit one of his howitzers into the top corner. Spectacular and a goal totally befitting of the little man’s genius.

Just a minute into the first half van Persie was denied a goal from a brilliant Ben Foster save, it was regarded by many as the turning point.

Then Rooney was slipped into the Arsenal box, he was going nowhere but Almunia came charging out like a bull. There was minimal contact but Rooney got what he was looking for. I think it was no different from the Eduardo dive midweek, the only difference was the stupidity of the keeper.

Minutes later we were behind, Giggs crossed in a mediocre cross and Diaby, somehow, managed to flick it into his own net. I think he was caught in two minds, clear over the top of the crossbar or heading it back to the shaky Almunia. The damage was done.

We had a goal ruled rightly offside and Wenger’s frustration boiled over and he booted an empty drinks bottle and was ludicrously sent to the stands for the final five seconds. The officiating throughout was a total and utter joke, I understand Wenger WON’T be punished for kicking the bottle according to the chief of referees and a public apology will be made. I just hope the referee that was once suspended for links with a betting company will be banned for good.

Now onto the abuse Wenger gets at Old Trafford every single year, surprisingly he doesn’t hear it at our biggest rivals, Sp*rs, or Chelsea, its only ever heard at Old Trafford. It just sums up the disgraceful supporters they have, the chanting could so easily be punished but its always swept under the carpet. The United fans hit the roof whenever something slightly risqué is chanted about them but they have no qualms in calling a man a pedophile just because of his appearance. Its down right disgraceful. Its not on par with racist chanting but its not far away. We are lucky that he is such a graceful man in situations like that and doesn’t lose his cool.

There will be more on the performance over the next few days on the blog as its a result we have time to dwell over, another stupid International break gives us that unwanted luxury.

Personally, I need more time to reflect on the game, I think we played very well throughout in stark contrast to the performances of last season but the lack of cutting edge after the second goal went in was slightly worrying but on another day it could be said van Persie’s free-kick might have flew in instead of hitting the bar and Gallas’s offside was very close and might have been missed by the officials.

I would like to hear your thoughts on the incidents yesterday, what do you think of the ‘sit down you pedophile’ chants, or the penalty decisions and officiating in general? Leave a comment below if you want a rant.
