Robin van Persie special – What he thinks about the Arsenal
Posted on by Martin @ thegoonblog.com

‘I have been in some of the meetings and the club knows how I feel about things. ‘I am very ambitious and I know the club is, too. I know we have what it takes. The potential is here but we need to make the final step. I have an influence in that. I know that.’

Today i am going to be focusing on an interview with Robin Van Persie, in my slightly bias opinion the best player in the world at this moment but the actual man and his talent, never seize to amaze me.

In the press he has been made out to be somewhat arrogant and petulant, though he is the opposite. Robin claims he was brought up to respect everyone, and he does,

I have never been arrogant, I have values. I have an understanding of life. Growing up in Rotterdam and playing on the streets, I had experience of many cultures and I have friends from many cultures. My dad always told me to respect people as much as you expect people to respect you.’

He also goes on to say how at Feyenoord he was in fact the victim of trouble, citing one example of when he asked for a massage on a sore leg, the massur was booked up and told him to return an hour early the next morning. Van Persie turned up and was barged asside by Pierre Van Hoijdonk because he was only 19. Once you are labeled with the ‘touble’ tag you can never shake it off, unless you are English of course, the fact is that Robin is in no way a trouble maker, if he was he would not be at the club. I just cant help but think that this is a little hint that Gallas was talking about him when he mentioned that player ’5 years younger’ in that infamous interview;

‘I have an opinion on what the problems are but I don’t think it’s fair to express that in a newspaper,’

Very professional and exactly right. Sometimes there has to be an exeption and some people have said ‘William Gallas was right to shout off about the team in the press’, personally i just feel that it was fustration because Wenger was always blabbing on about the ‘qualitee’ in the team. It was the fans pent up fustration too. Robin always thinks of his team and he claims that the only reason he plays football is because its not just him playing, going on to say that he would play Ping Pong or the Dutch favourite Darts if he didn’t enjoy being part of a team, he also speaks of his admiration got Thierry ‘that glare’ Henry and the great Marco van Basten.

‘They were always one or two steps ahead of the defenders, which is especially difficult in English football. I also loved the fact that they demanded such high standards. Thierry could be very demanding. He could never understand why a player would give him a bad pass and he would give them that look.

There was that famous moment in Moscow where Van Persie could have squared that ball to Henry (i think) and he didn’t, and Thierry was less than happy.

In my opinion Van Persie can be the best player at the club if he keeps his current form up because when Cesc is back he will give him a run for his money, and he will also have much better service with the arrival of Arshavin too.  On form, this team could be the best in the league and i have total belief in that. Gallas can be class, we know all about Sagna and Clichy, Arshavin is proven class, Nasri is class, Rosicky is class, Cesc is world class, Denilson is a very good player, Adebayor can be world class, Eduardo is a fantastic finisher, Bendtner is a good impact player, Walcott is our speed merchant and Van Persie is world class. This team can be the best, they just need to believe it.

If there is one man deserving of a trophy this season it is Robin and he has made it perfectly clear finishing in fourth place is not his aim, he wants much more,

not giving me trophies yet. It’s not giving me the pleasure at the end of the season, something to show for a season’s work. The guys who are sitting there in Zurich are great players who are also winning trophies. And that is what it’s about. This is not an individual sport and my first thought is what I want to achieve with my team. And only if you achieve something with your team can you then sit back and reflect on the contribution you made to that team. My target is to win trophies with Arsenal. Lots of players only think about themselves. There’s a saying in Holland: If my street is clean enough, then I am happy”. I am not like that. I want the whole club working well, not just my street. ‘Otherwise I will work on my serve and play tennis.’ Or ping pong, or darts.

This man is 100% Arsenal, if he carries on at this rate he will be one of the finest players the club has ever seen, i have every belief in that.

Til Tomorrow

And in the name of a very, very special man i had the honour of spending eighteen years of my life with;

‘Up The Gunners
